Common Causes of Ceiling Collapses in New York

Determining why a ceiling collapsed is not always obvious. And even if the cause does seem obvious, establishing who is to blame, or liable, might be complicated. But no matter the cause, when we handle your case, our Hill & Moin LLP ceiling collapse accident lawyers can determine both the cause of the collapse and who bears  responsibility for the collapse so we can pursue the client’s compensation.

Among the most common reasons for a collapse in New York are the following:

• Structural damage caused by stored items: If stored items are not safely secured, they can fall and cause structural damage. Also, stored items of excessive weight may weaken the structure of this area. If these items fall, they could break through the structurally-weakened area.
• Leaking pipes: Pipes that leak above the ceiling may allow water and other liquid to drain or pour onto the structure below and weaken it, resulting in a collapse.
• Code violations: Violations of the building code during construction may result in an inferior ceiling.
• Negligent maintenance: A property owner may neglect or provide poor, faulty maintenance of the ceiling.
• Ceiling remodel: A poor remodel may weaken this area of the infrastructure. This could be the result when installing a skylight, new lighting systems, conduits used in heating, ventilation, or air conditioning.
• Snow or ice: An accumulation of snow or ice that is not removed can create too much weight that causes a ceiling collapse.
• Water damage: Water that does not drain off the roof properly in a rainstorm, thunderstorm, or perhaps a “superstorm” may weaken the roof and cause a collapse.
• Fire: A fire in the building may weaken the structure, including the ceilings, and cause it to collapse.

Of course, these are not all the possible reasons a ceiling collapse may occur. To determine what type of negligence caused the collapse accident you experienced, talk with a capable lawyer from the law firm of Hill & Moin LLP. You deserve caring professionalism, and we provide it. What’s more, we can help our clients identify how and why they experienced a ceiling collapse accident.
